The Silverpicker's New Year's Resolutions

Sponsored by

We are this close to 2024 and, like most people, I’m taking stock of everything I’ve accomplished this year, and everything I want to do next.

In this week’s newsletter - the last for 2023 - I take you through my goals and resolutions for the new year. Don’t worry, you’re still getting your usual dose of numismatic news, deals and sales.

But first, pop quiz, hotshot (answer at bottom of email): While it's a common belief that the production of silver United States coins ceased in 1965, this isn't completely accurate.

Which U.S. coin continued to contain a 40% silver composition in its half-dollar denomination until 1970?

But as 2024 rolls into view, I sat down to share my numismatic and silver stacking goals and expectations for the new year. 2023 was a big one for me, and I have even higher hopes this time around.

We all know what Thanksgiving means. It’s well and truly the beginning of the holiday season. And what better way to celebrate than with buying your very own Silverpicker Christmas Sweater, as featured on this week’s video.

This week’s question comes via Reddit:

I can understand why JFsamurai might think this. You walk around a coin show, and all you see is older white men milling around. Meanwhile, your local coin dealer is shutting down, and it’s hard to escape the feeling that numismatics are becoming a thing of the past.

But here’s my rebuttal: coin collecting isn’t dying, but it is changing.

There are a ton of younger people getting into the hobby through the likes of YouTube and TikTok. They’re active on sites like Discord and Whatnot.

They’re not attending these coin shows because they’re not getting the content they connect with. For these events to thrive again, they could consider getting popular influencers and YouTubers speaking on panels (ahem).

The growing interest in precious metals like gold and silver also results in greater interest in coin collecting, given the obvious crossover.

So to sum up, coin collecting is not only not dying, it’s alive and very much kicking.

Pop quiz answer: Well done, those of you who got it - you go straight to the top of the class. The answer is, of course, the Kennedy Half Dollar.

See you next week!
